CHRISTIAN WORLD NEWS
Watch this feature story done by Christian World News on our Eleventh Annual Mother's Day Celebration. During the interview with Christian World News, Danette shared her vision and purpose for beginning this powerful outreach, that reaches out to literally thousands of women every year. "My heart is for people across the nation and around the world to remember single moms and widows on Mother's Day. You never know what the one next you at church, or the one in the desk next to you at work is going through. As we remember the single moms and widows that's true religion. The Word of God says to remember the cause of the fatherless, and to plead the case of the widow. That's the vision of the Mother's Day Celebration."
THE CHURCH GUIDE
By Carol Owen

Eleven years ago, a widow came to Danette broken hearted. She had recently lost her husband and the only son she had, lived hundreds of miles away and would have nothing to do with her. She could not get this woman off her mind and kept thinking of how lonely she was going to be on Mother’s Day.
The Lord reminded her how she felt on her first Mother’s Day as a single mom, and He spoke to her heart and told her to gather His women and honor them on their special day. That is just what she did and continues to do through the “Mother’s Day Celebration” sponsored by Joy Ministries.
Single moms, widows, and military wives whose husbands are deployed are invited to enjoy an elegant banquet meal along with their children. The red carpet is rolled out in their honor with flowers at the door, a Mother’s Day gift, and words of encouragement that will last a life time!
Single mom’s can’t go anywhere unless their children are cared for, so every year lots of exciting events are planned for these fatherless children. Isaiah 1:17 says, “…encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.” We are called to defend and protect fatherless children, or they will be left vulnerable to the enemy. God’s word says in Psalm 68:5-6, “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families…” This good news is shared with all the children on that day.

A youth pastor at age 19, and a traveling evangelist at 21, Danette Easterday Crawford ('89, School of Psychology & Counseling) always knew that her mission was to preach the Gospel. After graduating from Regent University and founding Joy Ministries, she realized that counseling the wounded goes hand-in-hand with preaching to them. "People are so hurt and wounded," she says. "We need to have an understanding of the hurts and wounds in their lives. We can't just preach the Word at them."
A non-profit evangelistic outreach organization, Joy Ministries shares salvation and restoration of mind, body and soul through programs designed to educate, develop character and help the poor and fatherless break free of the cycle of poverty.
"We encourage them with the Gospel message and by meeting their practical needs," Crawford says. "People are very gracious and thankful, but it's an honor that God has allowed me to function in my calling. He's miraculously provided for us and gives me grace and strength." MOTHERING MOTHERS ON THEIR DAY
By Laine M. Rutherford - The Virginian Pilot
Danette Crawford believes that all mothers should be celebrated on Mother's Day. Not just the woman with the doting husband and adoring children who buy cards, flowers and gifts.
But the single mom who is working one or more jobs to support her family, helping with homework and trying her best to solve the problems and dilemmas, which, at times, can seem insurmountable.
And the widowed or senior mothers whose children are grown and are celebrating their own Mother's Day, sometimes far away, sometimes forgetting that once a mom, always a mom, no matter what the age.
Crawford also remembers the military wife, handling everyday life at home while her husband is deployed. Often, she's in the area without family to help celebrate, without her spouse to help the children bring her breakfast in bed, without someone to say, "You're a great mom. Keep up the good work". MOTHERS GATHER TO CELEBRATE THEIR DAY
By Nicole Morgan - The Virginian Pilot

Dondra Paker is a single mother whose children say she goes without basic necessities in order to
give them what they need – andwant. Her 11-year old son, Carlos Parker, said, “She’ll buy us
clothes, but she wont buy herself clothes.” When asked how that made him feel, Carlos said, “not good. She needs to do stuff for her, too.”
Parker, of Virginia Beach, works as a customer relations representative and is busy raising two children, Carlos and his sister, Asia Parker, 6. She finally decided to do a little something for herself
Sunday and attended a Mother’s Day program at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. The event, sponsored by the Virginia Beach based Joy Ministries, drew about 1,500 people, according to organizers.
It was geared toward widows, single mothers and wives whose military husbands are deployed. “God wants to touch those women. They’re forgotten,” said Doris Dunekack, an office manager at Joy Ministries. Read More Of This Article
MINISTRY TUCKS JOY INTO RETURN-TO-SCHOOL BACKPACKS
Sandra J. Pennecke - "Virginia Beach Beacon" from The Virginian Pilot
Crawford recalled speaking with a single mother of five about her childhood first-day memories. "She said so many kids would laugh and tease her all year long. That's when I challenge people to help make that first day an awesome one for these kids", she said.
The inaugural First Day Challenge, held seven years ago, distributed 65 sets of backpacks to those in need. This year's goal is to supply 2,000 children in kindergarten through 12th grade throughout Hampton Roads with backpacks full of school supplies.
Two buses will travel into five of Joy Ministries adopted neighborhoods to deliver the backpacks and an inspirational message before school starts.
Mothers in need who do not reside in an adopted neighborhood can make an appointment to see if they qualify. Crawford also created a personal goal to give 100 children with extreme needs $100 worth of school clothes each. Read More Of This Article.
